School Profile

Originally a school for the children of US missionaries, PCS now also enrolls a number of international students. The school enrolls an average of about 45 students from 1st through 12th grades. The school has approximately eight full time teachers and a comparable number of part-time teachers.  PCS is governed by a local self-perpetuating board.

PCS provides a Biblically-focused 1st through 12th grade education with an English-language US curriculum. PCS serves families seeking a Christian education in an international environment that promotes holistic growth and academic excellence.

Job Description

The principal oversees all aspects of the academic realm, from classroom climate to planning, instruction, and assessment to curriculum needs, as well as appropriate staffing of classes, while also managing any discipline / conflict issues among students, families, and/or staff, encouraging all to deal with any concerns in a biblical manner. The principal also oversees all standardized testing, staff recruitment and care, and student event planning.

Qualifications

  • Essential requirements:   
  • An enthusiastic, authentic and vibrant Christian faith
  • ​A theological compatibility with PCS’s Statement of Faith, with which he or she must agree and sign
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • At least five years’ experience as an educator
  • A passionate commitment to K-12 education
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in an educational or other non-profit setting
  • An ability to command the respect of all the school’s constituencies, especially the students and their parents, the teachers and staff, and the board


Preferred requirements:  

  • A Master’s degree in Education or Administration, or comparable qualification
  • At least three years’ experience teaching in a K-12 setting
  • Conversational Spanish
  • Professional experience in a cross-cultural educational setting
  • A three-year commitment

Responsibilities

School Planning & Developing

  • Develop and revise the school continuous improvement plan/strategic plan according to the school’s mission & vision.
  • Use the data collected from various stakeholders and the guidance of the vision & mission to put together a plan for continuous improvement and refining areas of weakness.
  • Present & inform the board regularly of the plan and current conditions of the school.
  • Keep the board chair informed of any concerns or ideas.
  • Keep connected with TeachBeyond to inform of any major changes and for any assistance or tips.

Conduct Safety procedures in conjunction with the administrative office

  • Yearly review emergency policies & procedures.
  • Conduct practice drills.
  • Conduct a building safety check regularly and update any unsafe supplies & tools.
  • Regularly evaluate Safeguarding policies & practices in conjunction with the safeguarding team.
  • Encourage documentation of all interactions which would help provide clarity to any potential concerns.

Promote the school & recruit for new staff and students

  • Utilize & contact MissionNext, TeachBeyond, Avant, CrossWorld, International Mission Board & the PCS website for staffing needs.
  • Oversee and encourage the schools’ promotional materials, such as website, social media & others accordingly.
  • Receive & review applications for new staff for the next school year.
  • Promote the school to the community for potential students & their families.
  • Receive & review student enrollment applications for admissions.
  • Oversee appropriate testing for students entering into the school.
  • Build up school culture, by organizing various events, & creating school spirit.

Support and Encourage Staff

  • Update personnel job descriptions annually.
  • Protect staff against wrongful conditions including harassment.
  • Inform staff of school & staff policies.
  • Encourage staff unity according to Rom. 12, and encourage staff to take care of their own conflicts according to the Matthew 18 principle.
  • Encourage & support teachers with opportunities to learn how to manage their classrooms more effectively & biblically for the benefit of the learners.
  • Provide Professional Development courses and tips to help support teachers in their classroom regularly.
  • Regularly observe & evaluate teachers for their growth & development

Oversee Morale or School Culture

  • Assist with planning & providing opportunities for extracurricular activities that support and encourage the staff, the classroom, or the families of PCS.
  • Oversee chapel arrangements & encourage the worship team’s directions.
  • Head up the Spiritual Emphasis Camp committee to:
  • Communicate with Highland Community Church leadership planning for camp and provide their transportation and material needs.
  • Communicate with the Oasis Camp.
  • Communicate with Oaxaca Christian, IME Christian, and home schoolers about camp details.
  • Oversee the camp program, schedule, and activities.
  • Assist in finding staff for kitchen, first aid station, store, etc.
  • Oversee registration, finances, and cabin assignments.
  • Oversee the camp and deal with all crisis situations.
  • Oversee the closing and clean-up of camp.
  • Evaluate all aspects of the camp afterwards.

Oversee school academics

  • Establish yearly calendar to be rolled out by April.
  • Establish the secondary class schedule in conjunction with the Student Academic Counselor, and consult with elementary team for elementary class schedule.
  • Oversee & collect data for academic improvement from testing programs in conjunction with the School Academic Counselor.
  • Iowa Basic standardized testing– School wide.
  • PSAT, ACT & SAT - Secondary.
  • Ensure proctored & AP courses meet College Board standards.
  • Curriculum.
  • Plan and manage school course & curriculum for the benefit of the school and in congruence of the school’s mission and vision & the continuous improvement plan.
  • Gather input from staff about the functionality & practicality of the curriculum.
  • Gather information about student’s success rates in different classes & curriculum & testing.
  • Make adjustments in curriculum & course structures based on information gathered from the data.
  • Oversee graduation ceremonies & keep staff & student handbooks current and available.
  • Oversee & guide teacher’s lesson planning, grading policies, syllabi & parent letters to keep in line with the mission & vision.

Oversee finances & budget proposals

  • Work with the Financial Administrator to complete the school budget and finances are in line with the school’s mission & vision.
  • Receive & review regular financial reports and budget information from the Financial Administrator.
  • Inform staff of classroom budget spending.
  • Work in conjunction with Financial Administrator to make purchases necessary for the operation of the school.

Oversee welcoming of new staff into both school culture & country culture.

  • Advise appropriate agencies & new staff what is needed & when to get to Mexico & how to prepare.
  • Assist with visa paper work as necessary in conjunction with the appropriate mission agency.
  • Assist with language learning as necessary.
  • Assist with finding household furnishings as necessary.
  • Assist staff who are new to the area with finding a local church as necessary.
