Brief History
Rosslyn Academy began as Mara Hills School in northern Tanzania in 1947, as a school for children of Mennonite missionaries. In 1967, the school was moved to its present location in Nairobi, and the name was changed to Rosslyn Academy. The Baptist Mission became co-owners and managers in 1976, and the Assemblies of God Mission became the third sponsoring agency in 1988. After moving to a full K-12 program, the school celebrated its first graduating class in 1991. Today, Rosslyn is home to approximately 680 students from over 50 different nationalities.

Rosslyn Academy seeking to glorify God by offering an American curriculum for missionary, international, and local families, is a Christian PreK-12 non-profit school that builds into the Kingdom of God and invests in the lives of students and their parents so that they can, in turn, invest in the lives of people in Kenya and beyond.

Strategy

- Develop and implement the financial and operational strategies, policies, and plans that underpin the organisational objectives.
- Oversee the implementation of the campus master plan as finances allow.
Leadership and Management
- Serve as a member of the Rosslyn Academy Executive Team.

- Manage the performance of direct reports utilizing the Rosslyn Academy appraisal system.
- Support the training and professional development of direct reports and the wider support staff.

Finance
- Supervise the Finance Director (and the Business Office team as required).
- Proactively advise the Superintendent on all matters relating to financial strategy, including the timing of capital projects, relevant legislation, allocation of resources, and the impact of their decisions on the School's financial and strategic position.
- Align financial resources to institutional priorities as well as Rosslyn Academy Board Policies.
- Prepare monitoring reports according to the Board guidelines and schedule, and present them to the Board with the Superintendent.
- Oversee the preparation and control of the annual budget in accordance with the needs and goals of the school and in consultation with the Superintendent.
- Ensure that a robust system of financial planning and internal controls operates across the school consistent with strategy, policies (board and administrative), and procedures, utilizing GAAP and ECFA accepted guidelines for non-profit accounting.
- Work closely with the Finance Director to implement effective processes, including fee collection, debtor management, purchasing, payroll, tax arrangements, and the annual external audit (with the auditor identified by the Board of Governors).
- Oversee the preparation of monthly management accounts, financial projections, and cash flow forecasts, and report performance against KPIs to the Superintendent and the Board of Governors.
- Analyse school fees and costs, including benchmarking, and work with the Executive Team to set pricing strategies, including tuition fees and extras.
- Ensure effective procurement arrangements are in place to facilitate best value.
- Follow the annual calendar for budgeting and reporting established by Board and Admin policy.
- Facilitate efforts to work with donors and other methods of creating new, significant revenue streams for the school.
(Note: the following items will be added gradually over the first year of employment, with another leader advising during transition.)
Capital Projects
- Update and oversee development of the campus master plan.
- Oversee and work closely with the Superintendent, Facilities Director, and external project managers to plan and deliver capital projects to time, specification, and budget, in accordance with limitations defined in Board policy and following GAAP and ECFA best practices for capital projects in non-profit accounting systems.
Facilities
Oversee and work closely with the Facilities Director to ensure:
- Buildings, grounds, sports, and other facilities are maintained and compliant with regulations.
- Cleaning, food service, waste disposal, and security services meet high standards.
- Contractors are held accountable against service level agreements.
- Effective delivery of transport, medical services, merchandising, and logistics.
- Sustainable solutions reduce environmental footprint and energy consumption.
- Emergency Operations Plan is updated annually.
Human Resources
Oversee and work with the Head of HR to:
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, contracts, training, appraisal, and compliance with Kenyan Labor laws.
- Ensure accurate record management.
- Report FTE for budgeting and forecasting.
- Link HR systems with business office systems for leave, stipends, salaries, etc.
Medical & Wellness
- Oversee Health Services Director and campus Wellness Center.
Food Services
- Oversee Food Services leadership and ensure smooth, high-quality service.
Information Technology
- Supervise IT Systems Director.
- Oversee IT strategy aligned with school plan.
- Ensure cost-effective IT infrastructure and services.
- Safeguard IT network and data integrity.
- Ensure compliance with Kenyan data protection law.
Commercial
- Identify, negotiate, and oversee partnerships with third parties to support and enhance education and co-curricular provision.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
- Manage risk assessment and maintain Risk Register.
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage.
- Advise on business continuity planning.
- Promote health and safety culture.
Other: Duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
