The Director serves as the administrative and academic head of Haven of Peace Academy (HOPAC), providing leadership across all areas of the school. The Director guides the programs and activities of HOPAC toward excellence in academic programs and Christian education, equipping children of the mission community in Tanzania to live Christ-centered lives.

Founded in faith by five missionary families in 1994, HOPAC has grown into one of East Africa’s leading international schools, serving a vibrant, diverse community of over 400 students representing more than 30 countries

Qualifications
General:
- Must be an evangelical Christian in good standing with his or her local church.
- Must be able to subscribe to the Statement of Faith of Haven of Peace Trust.
- Must be able to understand and interpret the Bible into a practical, applied world-view.
- Must have track record of successful Christian leadership.
Specific:
- Must have excellent English oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working in multicultural situations is highly desired.
- Overseas or international administrative experience preferred.
- At least two years of experience in school administration (K-12) preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Primary or Secondary Education from a Western college or university with at least three years of teaching experience and Master’s degree in Educational Administration preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate a thorough and working knowledge of Christian Education preferred.
Responsibilities
The Director ensures that the mission of the school is being implemented in all aspects and activities and assumes responsibility for leadership of the school and its program.
Spiritual Leadership
- Model a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and Bible-based living.
- Strive to inspire others to Christian faith, commitment and living.
- Ensure that a Christian world-view is inherent within the total environment of the school.
Professional Leadership
- Consistently model professionalism and lead the staff in building an effective team.
- Ensure current and proper compliance of the school with all legal requirements of Tanzania
Academic Leadership
- Provide for continuous training in Christian Education for all teaching staff.
- Develop and evaluate the curricula, ensuring that these are coordinated among all levels of the school.
- Lead in the continuous process of improvement through seeking excellence in the programs of the school.
- Maintain a program of admission of students consistent with Board policy.y.
Administrative Leadership
- Establish administrative structures that support the work of all teachers and staff.
- Recommend for Board approval, and manage the annual budget with appropriate financial planning and control.
- Provide for the maintenance of the physical plant of the school. Implement existing strategic plans to their completion
Leadership in Development
- Shepherd the school through the initial accreditation process and ensure ongoing compliance needed to maintain accreditation
- Lead the process of developing medium range (5 year) and long range (15 year) plans to meet the needs of the school.
- Provide for the development and implementation of fundraising strategies.
Staff Leadership
- Provide for the recruitment, training and evaluation of administrators, teachers and staff.
- Provide for the appropriate cultural and school orientation of new teaching staff.
- Maintain an environment that is conducive to the effective performance of the professional and nonprofessional staff.
- Through personal and delegated supervision maintain an awareness of the performance of all teachers and staff.
- Through personal and delegated authority perform regular (annual) evaluations and training with all teachers and staf
Community Leadership
- Promote the philosophy and programs of HOPAC among the missions, parents and students in Dar es Salaam and Tanzania, as well as internationally.
- Represent the interests of HOPAC and its students to colleges and other schools.
- Represent the interests of HOPAC and its students to relevant Tanzanian government ministries.
- Develop the Christian character and outreach of HOPAC in Dar es Salaam.
In respect to Board Leadership
- Implement the policies of the Board. Serve as the administrative and educational consultant to the Board of Governors.
- Provide information and advice to the Board on essential issues within his or her expertise.
- Maintain open communication with the Board Chairman and seek advice from the Board when needed and appropriate and appropriate.
Personal Development
- Maintain a program of reading and professional growth for more effective leadership.
- Be involved in the ministry of a local church.
Recruiting
All staff are God’s provision to HOPAC in response to the specific prayers of the Board and community of HOPAC. Therefore each staff member is asked to be cognizant of God’s specific direction toward this position and assured of His faithfulness to them when agreeing to this position.
Spiritual support and pastoral care, are normally arranged through a sending mission agency. If the applicant is an expatriate citizen and not under a mission agency then a local congregation (in Tanzania) and/or a church in the country of origin must agree to provide the pastoral authority for the applicant.
Preferably from a Western, English speaking country. It is highly desired that English is the first language, but must have a high degree of proficiency in English.
Terms of Service
The Director receives a salary and benefits. Contracts are agreed on an individual basis. It is expected that staff members will be present at school for all working days unless they are ill or have specifically been granted leave, including compassionate leave, in consultation with their mission or sending agency. Travel and living arrangements are made by the individual or their mission. Assistance from HOPAC in either travel or living arrangements can be negotiated on an individual basis.
Because of the leadership nature of this position it is required that a minimum contract period be for three years. Additional, annual extensions can be negotiated at the end of the initial contract.
During every year of the contract and subsequently, the Director will be evaluated by the Board. Unsatisfactory performance or moral failure is grounds for dismissal.
Early termination for reasons unrelated to job performance or personal conduct must be communicated six months in advance. Decisions concerning renewal of contract by either party must be communicated no less than six months in advance of the end of the contract period.
Relation to Authority
The administrative structure of the school follows a classic model. The exercise of authority is such that the Board will work through the Director, and the Director will work through his or her school management team and the management team will work through its staff.
The Director is responsible for all aspects of the operation of Haven of Peace Academy as stated below and is directly accountable to the Board of Governors for the administration of the school. As the head of the school this position carries all the authority of the Board in enacting its responsibilities and is governed by the stated policies of the Board. Matters of delegation and discipline are left to the Director unless specifically reserved by the Board for its own action or delegation. Matters requiring interpretation of policies for specific action are governed by the Mission Statement and Core Values of the Board.
Evaluation
- Continuous performance evaluation will be provided through interaction with the Board during regular Board meetings.
- Specific, annual evaluation will be conducted by the Board.
- Evaluation will be carried out in fair, frank and open discussion with the Board.
